“A 25-year-old man has been found dead in a river in Lincolnshire after falling off a boat”, police said.
Friends of the man called Lincolnshire Police just after 1am on Sunday morning after the man fell from a boat and went missing underwater in Witham Bank West near the Boston Motor Yacht Club in Boston.
Underwater teams attended the scene and a man’s body was recovered from the River Witham at 8.45am on Sunday, a police spokeswoman said.
Eye witnesses have said the man, who is thought to have lived on a boat moored at the yacht club, had been drinking with friends on a neighbouring boat when the accident happened.
The police spokeswoman said: “We were called to the motor yacht club area of Witham Bank West shortly after 1am following a report a man had fallen off a boat and was missing in the water.
“We have had underwater search teams there and sadly have recovered a body of a man from the water.”
The man has not yet been formally identified, she added.
A post-mortem is due to take place and the coroner has been informed.
“At this time we are treating it as an unexplained death but it would appear that it was a tragic accident,” the police spokeswoman added.
