A Skippers Responsibility

Responsibilities of a Skipper

A skipper remains subject to maritime law regardless of the type or size of vessel they command. This is especially important in situations where legal action, such as claims of negligence, may arise.

Safety

The skipper holds overall responsibility for the wellbeing of everyone on board, as well as the condition of the vessel itself. This includes ensuring the craft is suitable for the intended waters and that all crew members understand relevant health and safety considerations. The vessel must be operated responsibly and in accordance with applicable laws at all times.

Navigation

A competent skipper should be familiar with navigation practices, weather conditions, tidal movements, and other relevant factors specific to the waterway being used. It is also their duty to comply with all local navigation rules and maritime regulations.

Equipment

It is the skipper’s duty to ensure that all onboard equipment is properly maintained and in good working order before and during use.

Voyage Decisions

The final decision to begin or continue a journey rests solely with the skipper. Any legal consequences resulting from that decision are their responsibility.
